If you are searching for a way to make a difference or to share the gifts you have, I can’t think of a better way than to share the joy of music. I want to see us share the joy of music with everyone who wants to participate, with everyone who wants to come together in our community for the arts. I don’t want to see another child have to have a difficult conversation with parents about the financial reality of being able to afford to pursue an instrument, or attend camp, or take lessons. And a few days later a grateful sparkling Julianna Grace came to pick up the harp and sign an instrument loan agreement.*** ***So we decided not to auction off the harp, but to add it instead to our instrument lending program. And her parents were very responsible and gentle about explaining the reality of the situation which is that the harp is easily worth over a thousand dollars and not in their budget. Her eyes sparkle with wonder when she talks about the harp. “And I don’t want to love it, if we can’t afford to take it home.” “Because I am afraid I will love it.” She whispered. “Why are you afraid?” Her mom asked, after all they had been talking about it for some time. But soon they stopped by the office in person and mom admitted to me that the little girl was afraid to play the harp. Could their daughter come by and play the harp they asked? She was only about 11 years old and was starting her music studies with the piano, but had since developed a fascination with the harp.įor a while we couldn’t connect I thought because of schedules, or because I had missed an email from them arranging a time.
